With nearly 2 billion annual riders of the 110 year-old-subway system, New York is undergoing drastic and Dramatic city-wide changes to keep up with the times, something that’s more than necessary for a few centuries-old city to survive.
In 2016, the mayor and governor budgeted a collective $10 billion to begin improvements at MTA System… Even though the MTA proposed a $32 billion plan for modernized subway expansions…
Even with less than 1/3 of the necessary Budget, NY moved with its plans for modernization and restructuring… This gave way to the subway’s newest trends: Charging ports, Wi-Fi hot-spots and accurate countdown clocks, available all in most of the MTA stations now. At the near future (2020) Additional plans include, transitioning to cardless entry, (users will be able to scan their phone for entry) similar to tickets of the New Jersey Transit…
Underway Current renovations all-over NYC on tunnels and rails are driving the system towards an eco-friendly future. Renovated stations and new subway cars will convert heat from their brakes into energy…
The on-going upgrade of the 110 year-old-subway, the mode of transportation for 55% of city commuters, are long overdue. There are still “legendary” cars from the 60’s and 70’s that will soon be replaced. By 2023 the MTA plans on spending more than $3 billion USD on nearly 1,200 new subway cars. Half of these upgraded cars are going to be open-ended (no doors between cars)…
These upgrades will definitely “move” the subway system into the future…
