WASHINGTON D.C. President Trump, in a three lines letter to the United Nations notified UN and then the U.S Congress, that the United States is formally withdrawing from the World Health Organization.
The Official withdraw comes amid a rising number of COVID 19 cases the last 21 days, throughout the country. The Official withdraw it will be binding for one-year.
Sen. Robert Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee tweeted the news today saying:
“Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the @WHOin the midst of a pandemic. To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn’t do it justice. This won’t protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone,”
A State Department official also confirmed that “the United States’ notice of withdrawal, effective July 6, 2021, has been submitted to the UN Secretary-General, who is the depository for the WHO.”
This development comes at a time when worldwide the number of cases of COVID 19, exceeds 11,837,245 and the number of deaths exceeds 543,380, according to data from worldometers.
